DIY Minimalist Bed Frame: Simplify Sleep Space with a Clean Design

If you’re looking to simplify your bedroom and create a peaceful, clutter-free space, a DIY minimalist bed frame is a great project to tackle. Building your own bed frame is surprisingly easy and affordable compared to buying one. Plus, it allows you to customize the size and style to fit your space perfectly.

I recently built a minimalist platform bed for my guest room and was really happy with how it turned out. Here’s how you can build your own minimalist bed frame too.

Tools and Materials Needed for a Minimalist Bed Frame DIY

To construct a basic minimalist platform bed, you’ll need the following:

Step-by-Step Instructions for Your DIY Minimalist Bed

  1. Measure and cut the frame pieces: Start by measuring and cutting the 2x4s to create the rectangular frame of your bed. You’ll need two long pieces that will run the length of your desired bed size (e.g. 75" for a twin, 80" for a full/double, 85" for a queen). Then cut 3-4 shorter pieces that will run width-wise, depending on the size of your bed (e.g. 3 pieces for a twin, 4 for a larger size). The width of your frame should match the width of your mattress. Use a circular saw or handsaw to make straight, even cuts.

  2. Assemble the frame: Lay out the cut 2x4 pieces on a flat surface to form a rectangular frame. Use a carpenter’s square or measure diagonally from corner to corner to ensure the frame is square. Make any necessary adjustments until it is even. Then apply a bead of wood glue to each joint where the boards meet. Drill pilot holes and secure each joint with 3" wood screws driven through the long side boards into the ends of the shorter boards. Wipe away any excess glue.

  3. Add center support: To prevent the bed from sagging in the middle, cut 1-2 lengths of 1x4 board to fit width-wise inside the frame. Glue and screw them to the insides of the lengthwise 2x4 frame boards at the center point of the frame, using 2.5" screws. For added support on larger beds, you can add a second set of 1x4s about 16" from each end of the frame.

  4. Measure and cut the platform: Measure the inside dimensions of your assembled frame carefully. Cut a piece of ¾" thick plywood or MDF to fit those dimensions, with about a ½-1" overhang on each side for the platform. It’s important that the platform fits the frame exactly to avoid gaps. You may need to trim or sand the edges after cutting for a snug fit.

  5. Sand and finish: Use a sander or sandpaper to smooth any rough or splintered areas on the frame and platform boards. If desired, you can stain or paint the frame at this stage for a more polished look. I recommend a natural wood stain for a minimalist style. Let the stain or paint dry completely according to instructions before proceeding.

  6. Attach the platform: With the frame lying flat, place the cut plywood or MDF platform on top, with the finished side facing up. Make sure it is centered with an even overhang on all sides. Secure the platform to the frame by drilling pilot holes and screwing through the bottom of the 2x4s and 1x4s up into the platform with 2.5" wood screws spaced every 6-8 inches.

  7. Add finishing touches: With the platform secured, your minimalist bed frame is complete! You can customize it with your choice of finish, legs/feet, or a simple headboard if desired.

That’s it! Your minimalist bed frame is complete. Now all you need is a great mattress like the Puffy Lux Mattress, which provides cooling, pressure relief and spinal alignment - perfect for getting a restful night’s sleep on your new bed.
